Week 10 Results
1st ($85 / 10pts): Randall "Double Kill" Ryan
2nd ($0/ 7pts): Aaron "Awww" Wanstrath
3rd ($0 / 4pts): Adam "Pause for Effect" Joseph
4th ($0 / 2pts): Eric "Vaporware" Hepburn
Low Stakes / 10 Players / 1 Table / 1245 Endtime
Two themes for the evening: 1) Don't fear the felt, and 2) Do fear the board. Subthemes might be a) Randy & Eric find bathroom humor funny...and they are alone at the table on that one, and b) Aaron got the lowest test scores ever in "The History of Rock and Roll" class.
Everyone except Aaron & Laura re-bought. But lest one thinks that's because of crazy, loose play in the first three rounds, one would only be partially correct. The board was punishing pre-flop and post-flop leaders. Two that come to mind: I have Ad-Kd pre-flop, bet reasonably big. Adam and someone else (Laura?) call. Flop comes down 10x-Jx-Qx. Adam goes all-in, Laura folds. "Really?" says me. Of course I call with a flopped straight. Adam has Jx-10x for two pair. Next two cards.... X & 10 -- rivering a boat for Adam, $5 in quarters for R2's rebuy.
2nd example: Eric 8x-7x pre-flop. Jen sitting on AA, Mick sitting on KK. Flop comes 6-5-4. Eric hits his Nut Straight on the flop and bets big, Jen goes all in. In one of the stranger moments, Mick (after thinking "Jen's got rockets") calls. Eric, being all hoppy breath, also calls...because Jen bluffs a lot, right? 9 comes on the river, Eric super-straights, Mick & Jen push $5 more each in.
All of us who survived late had gotten extremely short-stacked at one time or another, only to come back at timely moments. I also got lucky with J-J preflop, the blinds at $2K-$4K. I bet $6K preflop, Adam goes to $12K, and something told me to lay it down. Don't know for sure what Adam had, but based on his reaction and the eventual outcome, I think I walked away from a bloodbath that would only have been using my blood.
More craziness: John, short-stacked, has A-Q preflop. R2 calls...with pocket aces. Jen calls...with pocket Kings. Flop comes & pairs John, but no more help & R2 gets one of three double kills for the evening.
The ugliest hand of the night: Mick goes all-in pre-flop with Ah-Qh. R2 calls with As-Qs. Split pot right? Nope...flop comes up with one spade, turn produces another, and the river makes a flush for R2.
One that didn't go according to the rest of the evening: Laura has J-10, and goes all-in with a board of 10-x-x. Aaron...holding Big Slick and not a lot of chips compared to the rest of the table (but over Laura)...calls.
Of note: Eric got the same run of K-K I had last week (I got it 5 times, won each time whether revealed or not). I think Eric got K-K 6 times this week, but lost several big pots when someone else either made a bigger hand or at least bet like they had it. I finally took out Eric when my open-ended straight draw (with top pair of Js on the board) took out Eric's last K-K.
Eventually, it was Aaron & myself, and I was way big stack. Final hand I had J-10, Aaron sitting with 9-7 suited. Board comes 9-8-x, Aaron goes all in. Turn card is a 7, and I've straighted yet again.
Aaron: your punishment shall be to go buy the catalog of one of the following (your choice) : Led Zeppelin, Elvis Costello, The Clash. And there shall be a quiz.
