Martin here - after last week's successful sabotage by Google, where Adam's invite was diverted to my junk folder, I was glad to be able to "activate alternate booking system" and sit at the table again. T'was another night I was not paying attention to who was beating who etc., thinking I would not win (especially on big money night). Frankly I was so distracted by Daniel O. being present, first time in probably 6 months, that I didn't know what the heck I was doing and blurted out my entire $20 stack Adam's way in the first hand, doubling up AJ nicely for hand #2. Despite already sitting in the dealer's chair, and with only $15 in pocket, I decided to rebuy, (wise investment w/ hindsight). I proceeded to blow through about a third of my 2nd buy-in, most of which went Daniel's way, before I was able to shake myself out of it, pull out of the nose dive and start folding. Cards were pretty nice I have to admit... a lucky pair of bullets in hand against Daniel was one way I was able to start clawing my way back. Maybe driving to the ATM at the break helped me clear my mind, I dunno.
Three days have passed since then and the time of this account, and unfortunately I can't remember anything in the middle except the head-to-head around 11pm. Adam vs. Martin, Randy and Daniel dealing. We started with similar chip totals, neither in a dominant position, and fought pretty strong, w/ some big bets. Eric was standing around to watch and I was showing him my hands (so he got to see what an evil bluffer I was). I looked at what were to become my final two cards... two-three of spades. I was small blind, and instead of limping to the flop, I bet fairly strong, like it was cards worth getting to the flop with (and when you're in MG's World... those are straight and flush cards waiting to happen anyway! :) Adam came completely over the top with a much larger bet. I decided to back up my own foolish bravado, and call. The flop was two moderate spades and a non-spade Ace, so I had 4 spades altogether. I bet moderately again, and Adam bet bigger than my pre-flop bet, representing a paired ace or something else pretty nice, and, with four-to-the-flush and two more cards to choose from, I called. The turn saw a non-spade Jack. Adam appeared to be in an increasingly strong position. With Ace & Jack on the table, he could have totally chased me off at this point, but mysteriously, he checked... so I checked too (putting on an Austin-Powers-like mysterious face of my own) Quite a large chunk of my chips were in the middle, the pot representing a pretty sizable power-swing. The river card was another middle spade, giving me an honest but very unglamourous flush... the English Cuisine of flushes, you might say. Adam went All In w/ 32,000. Gulp! I was slightly over him in chips, and was able to take time to consider my response. Losing to his better flush would give him 95% of the chips on the table... and would be a reasonably honourable loss, since a flush ain't stinky. Winning would end the evening in my favour. What did he have? The Ace didn't matter now. I did have a flush, but w/ my two-three it was the worst possible! If Adam also had a spade flush, it was definitely going to beat mine. I figured... what are the chances of us both having spades, then three more arriving on the table? Seven dealt spades in all? Slim enough for me to call, so I did. My flush prevailed. For some reason, I never did see what Adam had, my head was spinning since I'd won big money night for the first time in ages. I think he actually might have mucked, claiming he'd been bluffing the whole time. Adam did I get this account wrong? Anyhow, I cleared the table and chips away with a happy grin this time :)
